Hi Paul,

Speaking for myself, I agree with your comment about RBB value, but LEs have crossed the block recently as high as $15K. And yes, they were just about perfect. On 2nd thought, one could not turn this car into one of those for an additional investment of just $7,000. Of course any of us who have restored an MGB know what going upside-down is all about. We do not live within that fear.

Comment on Primer + Patina: 1949 GMC 100 Panel Van by Wayne https://barnfinds.com/primer-patina-1949-gmc-100-panel-van/#comment-1411548 Wed, 29 Nov 2023 03:45:17 +0000 https://barnfinds.com/?p=678583#comment-1411548 I had a 1953 Chevy version of this truck. It was factory red on the outside and grey like this on the inside. One thing I did notice on this truck (and I had on mine) was the starter pedal to the left of the accelerator pedal. I had forgotten about those! (no starter solenoids in those days!) I bought the truck originally to use as hay storage for my FFA project bulls. But it ran so nice, that I drove it all over the fire roads back home. I learned to double clutch as first gear was not synchronized (Nor was my my Moms ’63 Impala 327 that I took my driver’s test in. One block from the DMV I had to go around a corner that didn’t include a stop. I double clutched into first and the examiner asked what I had just done. I explained the what and why and his reply was turn around and go back, you passed!)

I think the striker bolts were painted at the factory. Nothing to see there.

I’d love to own one of these coupes, preferably a 53 or 54. Second choice would be one of these with the big grille.

George l Still wonder how sporting that 93 Allante with the more powerful Norstar engine and rear wheel drive could have been and you are most welcome my friend. You have a logically factual way of putting things.

Make a PPI of this “survivor” and bring a coating thickness meter.

Comment on Texas Barn Find: 1955 Chevrolet Bel Air Convertible by Wayne https://barnfinds.com/texas-barn-find-1955-chevrolet-bel-air-convertible/#comment-1411541 Wed, 29 Nov 2023 03:31:02 +0000 https://barnfinds.com/?p=678464#comment-1411541 Having a ’55 Convert in high school and college. I always pay attention to these cars. I have never seen a convert that was not a Bel Air. I’m not the expert and I never really delved into all the options. BUT, I believe that there were more than one trim level available in the Bel Air line. Mine was all original when I got it and it did not have the same rear bumper. The side trim was the same but, mine did not have the fancy headlight trim that this one has. Mine was not original when I was done. It had a very warmed over 283 and a Saginaw 4 speed. And for any of you that has changed a transmission on a Tri-5 converible, it’s a pain! Convertibles have an additional “X” frame and I had to unbolt the engine mounts and slide the engine forward in order to get the transmission “in the hole” before moving the engine back into place. I loved that car and still wish I had it!

I’ve seen that change too over the years in the hobby. But in the case of a car like this it wouldn’t be so much resale value as the sheer cost and effort of making it nice again. The engine alone would cost ten grand to rebuild. Plus it demands very specialized service knowledge to work on one of these.

Comment on Donated Classic: 1980 MG MGB by Paul T. Root https://barnfinds.com/donated-classic-1980-mg-mgb/#comment-1411537 Wed, 29 Nov 2023 03:10:35 +0000 https://barnfinds.com/?p=678832#comment-1411537 In reply to Cadmanls.

It was truly amazing that the MG engineers kept these going as long as they did. BL gave most money to Triumph for development. Those they did spend a bunch of money on further development of the B-series into the K-series (I think it was K-series, I’m getting forgetful). But that didn’t come to fruition until after 1980. I believe the MGB always outsold the TR7. I had one of those too. Also much maligned, but a fun car.

Handling for this and 77-on Bs are much improved compared to the 74 1/2 through 76. Sway bars returned, and tightened things up.

I’m not a “must be kept original” type person. But it would be a shame to
change this car much as original as it is, and an LE to boot. There aren’t many original MGBs left. If you want to swap engines there are plenty of more suitable MGBs out there (including mine). Someone wants to put a 289 in it? The Rover V8 is the logical choice for this car if a V8 is what you need. Otherwise, the Chevy V6. How about a Miata engine? I’ve thought an eco-boost would be good choice to make something really scary.

Comment on BF Auction: 1958 Lincoln Continental Mark III by Dinty https://barnfinds.com/bf-auction-1958-lincoln-continental-mark-iii/#comment-1411536 Wed, 29 Nov 2023 03:04:40 +0000 https://barnfinds.com/?p=676787#comment-1411536 In reply to Angel Cadillac Diva.

The Lincoln was ugly but a real head turner, just like my girlfriend. Nobody ever turned down a ride or double date in that black Linkin! Diva you are correct of course, Caddi’s are pure silk. My dad sold the Lincoln in ‘66 and not a used Devilke and drove it 259k after adding his own fuel injection kit.

Comment on Shed Find: 1926 Ford Model T Coupe by Harrison Reed https://barnfinds.com/shed-find-1926-ford-model-t-coupe/#comment-1411533 Wed, 29 Nov 2023 02:59:45 +0000 https://barnfinds.com/?p=678858#comment-1411533 What became of the comment I just left? In case it returns, I’m not sure if that tall black 1927 Model T in Tenafly (New Jersey) had four doors or not — but it was a graceous sedan whose interior ran all the way back to just inside the rear bumper and spare tyre. This was about 70 years ago, so please pardon me for not being certain. But it did have both an electric starter and a crank (just in case). I hope my prior post isn’t gone — because it contained some entertaining (at least, in my mind) recollections of my grandfather in the 1930s.

Boys, boys, Hold on a second here. Did you ever drive a ‘58 Lincoln? I did! In 1965, my dad bought one just like this from our neighbor Mac for $800. Dad sold his ‘59 dodge Royal (black beauty) since the rust had started. One trip was Kalamazoo to Marquette (450 miles) at night doing 80+ mph on 2 lane roads in the moonlight. The car just rolled out the road and rode smooth all the way. I could lay down in the back seat with my girlfriend and listen to WLS rockin in. The antenna went up/down with a motor. 7 motorized widows. Electric everything. 30 cent gas and 8 mpg. Read drive and 4800 lbs means a great car in snow. Life was good.

Comment on Low Mileage Survivor! 1980 AMC Pacer Wagon by Mark P https://barnfinds.com/low-mileage-survivor-1980-amc-pacer-wagon/#comment-1411531 Wed, 29 Nov 2023 02:56:23 +0000 https://barnfinds.com/?p=679018#comment-1411531 Wow what a nice car. In the early 80s there were seven AMCs in the drive way of my parents and aunts duplex at any given time. I’d like to have this but it’s too nice to drive in New England year round. It would be destroyed by the salt and brine used in winter.

The ram plates wouldn’t fit in the pancake filters. They won’t fit in the K&N tapered filter either. Normal stubby ram horns are also too tall. But there are very small stacks, that are only 1/4 or 3/8 tall that work well, and fit in all of these.
K&N tapered filters are no longer available new. When I replaced my worn out HIFs with a Weber. I sold the K&Ns for good money.

I missed the sill picture first time through. $5000 is more likely. A RBB for $10-12k, had better be perfect.
